IPTV Login Problems? Fix “Login Failed” and Error 401
“login failed” in IPTV Smarters. “invalid username or password.” “tivimate error 401.” “authorisation failed for above host.” “keeps asking for username and password.” Login errors are annoying because they feel like the service is rejecting you — but in practice the cause is almost always one of five mundane things, in a very specific order. This page walks that order.
Error 401 just means the server rejected the login attempt. It doesn’t mean you’re banned or hacked — it means something in the login handshake is wrong. Usually the credentials or the server address.
The 401 Ladder: Check in This Order
This ordering comes from community troubleshooting (the Dark IPTV 401 guide lays it out the same way). Work top to bottom — the number-one cause is embarrassingly simple.
Step 1: Retype your credentials — watch for trailing spaces
The number-one cause of login failures, cited across every source: a trailing space from copy-paste. You copy your username from WhatsApp or email, paste it into the app, and an invisible space comes along for the ride. The server sees “viking123 ” instead of “viking123” and rejects it.
Type the username and password manually instead of pasting — slowly, watching for:
- Trailing or leading spaces
- Capital letters (logins are usually case-sensitive)
- Confused characters:
0vsO,1vsl,5vsS - Auto-correct or auto-capitalisation on phones
If manual typing gets you in, it was the paste. Save the correct details somewhere this time (your WhatsApp thread with us works).
Step 2: Check your subscription is active
An expired plan returns a 401 or “invalid login” by design — the server just refuses the credentials of a dead account. It doesn’t always say “expired”; sometimes it says “authorisation failed” or “invalid username.” Before you go deeper: check your plan’s end date in your WhatsApp thread with us. If it lapsed, renewing brings the same login straight back — no new details needed.
This also covers the “says my account is expired but I just paid” case. Payments and server activations are usually instant, but if there’s a delay or a mix-up, the server doesn’t know about your payment yet. Message us with your payment confirmation and we sort it — don’t keep hammering the login button.
Step 3: Check the connection limit
IPTV plans include a set number of simultaneous connections — usually one stream at a time. If you’re already logged in on another device (the phone in your pocket, the TV in the bedroom), the server can refuse the new login. Log out or close the app on the other device and try again.
This is also why “works on my phone but not on my firestick” happens: the phone is holding the one connection. And if your details have been shared with someone else, their session can lock you out — change your password via us and keep it to yourself.
Step 4: Check the server URL and port
The server/portal URL has to be exactly right, and there are several ways it goes wrong:
- http:// vs https:// — use whichever your provider gave you; they’re not interchangeable.
- The port number —
:8080,:25461, whatever yours is. Miss it or change it and the app talks to nothing. - Double slashes —
http://server.com//with a stray extra slash breaks it. - The provider changed portals — providers occasionally move servers and issue new URLs. If your details worked last week and nothing else changed, check your WhatsApp thread for an updated server address before assuming anything else.
“Authorization failed for above host” usually means a server/URL/protocol mismatch rather than a credential problem — the app is talking to the wrong door, not using the wrong key. Copy the server URL fresh from the details we sent you, and type it rather than pasting.
Step 5: Delete the saved profile and re-add it
Apps store login sessions, and stored sessions go stale. In IPTV Smarters Pro: delete the saved profile entirely, then re-enter via “Login with Xtream Codes API” with fresh details. In TiviMate: remove the playlist and add it again. This fixes the “logged in yesterday, won’t log in today” case where the credentials are fine but the saved session is corrupt. Re-adding is more reliable than just hitting “reload” — it forces a clean handshake.
If you’re using an M3U playlist URL instead of Xtream Codes, the same principle applies: remove it and re-add it. And test the M3U URL itself: paste it into a browser on your phone or PC — it should download a playlist file. If the browser gets a 404, the URL is dead and no app setting will fix it; ask us for the current one. More on how these login formats work in our Xtream login credentials and the M3U playlist setup.
Step 6: Try the mobile hotspot test
Connect your device to your phone’s mobile hotspot and try logging in. If it works on hotspot but not on home broadband, the login was never the problem — your router, VPN, or ISP is blocking the connection to the server. Try changing DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, check whether a VPN changes anything, and look at the ISP blocking section for the UK-specific picture.
Step 7: Restart the app and the device
Cheap and occasionally effective — stale app state can produce login errors that make no sense. Force-stop the app, restart the device properly, and try the clean re-login from step 5 again.
Step 8: Contact the provider — the server-side refresh
If you’ve worked the ladder and the 401 survives, it’s our side of the counter. Message us and we’ll run through the provider-side fixes: a server-side line refresh, checking whether the account got locked after repeated failed attempts (in which case we delete and recreate it — re-enabling isn’t enough), confirming the current portal URL, or registering/resetting a MAC address for portal logins (see below). Repeated failed logins can lock an account — so if you’ve tried ten times, stop trying and message us instead. Each failed attempt can dig the hole deeper.
Reinstalling the app is the last resort, and it’s honest to say what it does: it fixes corrupt app installs, not credential or server problems. If the ladder points at the account, reinstalling is wasted effort.
Portal Logins: MAG Boxes, STBEmu and MAC Addresses
Portal-style logins (MAG boxes, STBEmu, Formuler in portal mode) work differently from Xtream Codes username/password logins. They authenticate by MAC address — your provider registers your box’s MAC on their end, and the portal checks it.
- Wrong or unregistered MAC = stuck at the authentication screen. If you see “portal not available” or the box never gets past loading, the MAC probably isn’t registered.
- Duplicate MACs cause the same symptom — if someone else’s box is using the same MAC (common with cloned or shared portal setups), authentication fails.
- The fix is provider-side: message us and we’ll register or reset the MAC on our end. You can’t fix this from the box.
If you’re setting up a MAG or STBEmu-style login for the first time, check our universal setup page for the device-specific walkthrough — and keep in mind that Xtream Codes logins are simpler and more forgiving if your app supports them.
“Invalid Login” vs “Authorization Failed for Above Host”
Quick decoder ring, since the two messages mean different things:
- “Invalid login” / “invalid username or password” / 401 → the credentials are wrong, the subscription is expired, or the connection limit is hit. Steps 1–3.
- “Authorization failed for above host” → the server address, port, or protocol is wrong. Step 4. The app reached a server; it just wasn’t the right one.
The Mistakes That Make It Worse
- Hammering the login button. Repeated failures can get the account locked server-side, turning a typo into a provider-side problem.
- Pasting credentials from screenshots or rich text. Formatting characters and spaces sneak in. Type manually, at least once, to rule it out.
- “Fixing” it by clearing data. Clearing data wipes the saved profile — fine if you have the details to re-enter, but pointless as a diagnosis step and it deletes the evidence of what was configured.
- Reinstalling first. Reinstalling fixes the app, not the account. Ladder first, reinstall last.
Still Locked Out?
Message us on WhatsApp at +44 7877 162001 — a real human answers, usually within minutes — with your username, what the app says exactly (screenshot helps), and which step of the ladder you got to. Nine times out of ten it’s a trailing space or a stale saved profile, and we sort it in one conversation. If it’s a server-side refresh or a MAC reset, we do it while you wait. The full help hub covers everything else that can go wrong, and new customers can skip all of this anxiety with a trial page — login arrives in minutes, no card required.
